Balayage is a French hair coloring technique where color is hand-painted directly onto sections of hair — no foils, no uniform placement. The word literally means “to sweep,” and that's exactly what it is: a stylist sweeps lightener or color onto the hair freehand, concentrating it toward the ends and leaving the roots softer and more natural.
